“Objection! Your honor, he’s clearly leading the witness!” I shout defeated.
“Well, it’s not clear to me Miss Jones. Now sit down!” Judge Malcolm commands. She is a stout woman with a terrorizing gaze over her thick-framed glasses.
What the hell! I think to myself noticing the defense attorney, Mr. Arnold, snickering as I take my seat. I hate his Paul Rudd wannabe looking ass. Judge Malcolm nods for him to continue while I squirm observing the defendant’s presuming arrogance! His lawless, grubby hands are in this for sure!
By the time the defense is done questioning his witness, it’s obvious my case is over. That fucking murderer will walk.
“Your witness Miss Jones.” Judge Malcolm states. Her scrutiny is daunting as she waits for me to get it together. One thing is certain; I need time to re-establish a case. It’s best to concede for now and hope the Judge allows me to retry.
“Your honor…may I approach?” I ask. She waves for me and Arnold to stand before her.
“It’s evident Miss Jones doesn’t have a case. I would like the charges against my client dismissed.”
I stare at the defense appalled at his outburst. I’d better calm my black girl neck and wagging finger because he’s right. I don’t have a leg to stand on at this point. Judge Malcolm looks for a response, but my overcome guise is evident. I will have my ass handed to me for losing this case. “He’s right your honor.” Achievement covers her face. Interesting…
“Step back.” She commands. “The case against Robert Thoms is dismissed without prejudice.”
“Your Honor!” Mr. Arnold interrupts.
Judge Malcolm eyes him infuriated as I control my optimism. “Therefore, Mr. Thoms you are free to go. However, Miss Jones has the option to retry.” She continues before the crack of the gavel. I smile knowing she has given me another chance to get that asshole. As I gather my things to leave the courtroom, I glance at Thoms and his smug smile while shaking his attorney’s hand. It’s not over yet prick.
The tension radiates from my colleagues as their suspicious eyes follow me through the halls. It’s apparent the news of my loss has echoed through the building already. I did everything I could, however I hope my boss doesn’t suspect something nefarious. After all, Thoms is a powerful man. Before I could take a seat, District Attorney Russell Berger steps into my office. He’s a tall gray-haired man that intimidates the hell out of me. Anxiety burrows through me as I await a barrage of criticism. Consequently, he smiles walking toward me.
“Don’t worry Alex, you did your best.” Oh thank goodness, I still have a job. “When we bring charges next time, let’s make sure your case is beyond solid.” He smiles once more taking my hand before leaving my office. I wish he wouldn’t touch me, it makes me feel uneasy. However, working for the best D.A. in Washington has its perks.
I spend the rest of the day and early evening trying to figure out where I went wrong starting from the beginning. I have to be ready for his conniving tricks next time…there will be a next time. “It’s late…I should rest.” I whisper to myself. Everyone has gone for the day it seems as I walk through the dim corridor toward the elevators. Once the elevator doors open to the empty garage, a large, tinted SUV pulls alongside my car. I stop with a sudden threatening urge to turn back. Without warning, two large men in suits step out of the front charging toward me, but I’m paralyzed.
“Miss Jones, please come with us.” One of them requests. However, I don’t think I’m given much of a choice.
“Ugh, I’m not going anywhere with you!” I snap trying to walk around them, but one grabs my arm as the other opens the back door of the shady SUV. “Get the hell off me!” I shout struggling to pull away. But my tiny stature is no match for this giant lumberjack in a suit handling me. He throws me in the back locking the doors. Fixing myself I realize I’m sitting next to the asshole himself. Mr. Robert Thoms.
“I’m sorry about that.” He says.
“Fuck you asshole!” I snap disgusted and out of breath. He smiles at me as if my tantrum turns him on. I hate he’s so attractive. “What do you want?” I ask admiring his caramel skin. I notice he’s removed the cornrows from his hair letting his long locks free.
“Don’t call me that jerk!” His smiles unoffended, but it’s obvious he’s trying to calm me down.
“I miss you.” He says staring at me exposed. Did he really just say that? I suck my teeth, crossing my arms jaded. “C’mon…you loved me once.”
“No! I loved a lie!” I snap. He glares with his captivating hazel eyes pulling me in. I can’t do this! I try to get out, yanking at the door handle but it’s no use. “Let me outta here.” I whisper. He slides over while my back is turned. His alluring fragrance is overwhelming, taking me back to a happier time. Tears fill my eyes as the reminder of his betrayal returns. “Robbie…please…don’t.” I request not daring to face him. He says nothing. His warm breath cascades down my neck as his fingers creep up my exposed leg. I don’t stop him. I can’t.
“Alexandra, stop fighting this.” He whispers pulling my ear lobe into his mouth in the way only he knows how. My clit vibrates as his tongue circles my ear. Holy shit! I can’t. I turn to his wanton hazel eyes staring down at me. He inches closer leaning his forehead against mine and nuzzles my nose with his. He moves his lips against mine, waiting for me to make the connection. How can I let this happen? How did I not see through his lies before he took hold of me? What should I do?
